SC&K Interviews Steve Braden, the "Cagey Veteran" of sea kayak guiding and instruction here on the GA Coast!

Illustrator, naturalist, and AT through hiker, Steve Braden has paddled the length of the GA Coast more than anyone we know. With enough knowledge and gathered material to produce a comprehensive coastal kayak guidebook, Steve is a true asset to the SC&K team.
SC&K recently interviewed Steve, as we celebrate and salute him in his 21st year as a lead sea kayak guide and instructor.

Steve is an ACA Coastal Kayak Instructor Trainer, ACA Advanced Open Water Instructor, and BCU Coach 3 A1 Instructor

How did you first get started paddling?
My first paddling experiences, at age 15, were in a canoe at a YMCA camp in north Georgia. Not all of those experiences were encouraging: I remember being catapulted out of the front of my canoe when the sternman—one of the camp counselors—steered us bow first into a rock in the middle of a modest waterfall on the Chattahoochee River.
My start as a sea kayaker began with a Red Cross sea kayaking class at Lake Mayer, with David Mason, Lynn Laycock, and Mike Robinson presiding. It was a great class and I was hooked.

Can you credit any particular people or resources for your skill development and inspiration as a paddler? This applies to both early in your career and currently.
Yes, but they would be too numerous to list!
After taking the class, and before I was able to afford my first sea kayak, I read lots of books by Derek Hutchinson, John Dowd, David Burch, and others. As inspiring as these were, getting my first boat—a plastic Aquaterra Sea Lion—was of course the key to developing skills. In my first year I became very proficient at making lots of mistakes, many of them more than once. So I would be remiss if I left out Experience and the Atlantic Ocean as two demanding but gifted instructors.
Friends helped more than I can say, among them Larry Dixon, Nigel and Kristin Law, Mike Robinson, and Dale and Debbie Kearney-Williams. It would also be difficult to adequately acknowledge how much I owe to both the ACA and the BCU. I am deeply grateful to my instructors and coaches for the training I received in both organizations. (And I heartily recommend this dual track approach to anyone interested in sea kayaking.)
I continue to learn from the paddling community here in Savannah. You know who you are, so please forgive me for not listing you all by name. It’s been my privilege to paddle with you.

What is your favorite Island on the Georgia Coast and why?
I’ve had so many nearly magical experiences on so many of them that it’s difficult to choose one. I’ll say Cumberland Island, which I have been visiting since the 1970s, first as a backpacker and much later as a sea kayaker. The first time I went there I thought the wilderness area must be what paradise was like, even with the bugs. It is the largest of the Georgia coastal islands and probably the most diverse. And one of the most fun ways I’ve found to experience that diversity is to not stay on the trails.

Can you share one of your most memorable paddling experiences?
Again, it’s difficult to choose, but here’s one:
On a beautiful August evening in 2009 I was sea kayak surfing with some friends. What you are doing when you are surfing is attempting to move in harmony with a wave you’ve chosen, and one of the waves I chose that evening was a very good one. I saw that it was sufficiently strong and steep enough to try an ender and pirouette. I had done these before, and have done them since, but this one remains my best. I stood the kayak up on its nose—the ender—and gave a twist for the pirouette. It wasn’t perfect, since I came down slightly sideways and had to brace back up. But it was a perfect moment—the water, the light, the exhilaration, the sheer fun of it, and the total engagement with what I was doing.
Mike Robinson once said that sea kayaking is very much “in the now.” And it’s true.

What's the best advice you can give to someone who wants to be an instructor or guide?
Be prepared to be a Renaissance man or woman. You will need to know a lot about a lot—sea kayaking, of course, but also weather, tides, risk management, navigation, natural history, and cultural history, among others. I am still learning (and relearning!) after 21 years, which I think is a measure of the richness of this profession.
Also, at different times you will need to be a coach, a confidant, a counselor, and a commander, as well as the voice of reason and caution. And you will need to know when to be each.

And finally, what is your favorite musical album?
Conan the Barbarian: The Complete Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Basil Poledouris.

Thanks, Steve! We're so glad to have you on our team here at Savannah Canoe & Kayak. We look forward to another great season filled with your paddling enthusiasm and wisdom.
Good on ya, mate!

Boatbuilding Class at Savannah Canoe & Kayak

At Savannah Canoe and Kayak we want you to get the very best out of each and every paddling experience you have out on the water, and we know that our guest instructor Brian Schultz, of Cape Falcon Kayak in Manzanita, OR, works very hard to design some of the best skin-on-frame kayaks you can buy or build anywhere, so we’re very glad to be able to offer this kayak-building class right here in Savannah at our shop.

Students may choose to build a higher volume more modern design called the F1, which is Brian's most versatile and high-performing design, a true "people's kayak,"  or students can go with the more traditional West Greenland style kayak (for the more experienced paddler or someone looking for speed and rolling capabilities.)
The F1 is a shorter and wider design, 14-1 3/4” x 23” , and with a bit more weight at 30lbs., it is still fast and performance oriented, and unlike the Greenland boat, I can put any of my novice-paddler friends in it and they will be comfortable and confident while out on the water. It is playful and fun in the surf, and it is also great for camping because it has extra volume and capacity for gear.

"The West Greenland boat I built is an amazingly elegant and beautiful boat. Weighing a mere 25lbs., it is super fast on the water, and it sits just above the water-line, so it is virtually unaffected by wind. It is a great option for someone wanting to practice rolling and even more of the traditional Greenland-style paddling techniques.." ~ Zac (Savannah Canoe guide and instructor)

The cost of the class includes all materials needed to build your own boat and Greenland-style paddle. Class will be held in the shop behind Savannah Canoe and Kayak, starting Saturday Oct. 25th-31st from 8:30am-5pm daily.

Registration deadline is July 31st!! Please call us with any questions you may have.

We have 6 places open for this unique program. The total cost is $1895.00, which includes all materials needed to build your own boat and Greenland-style paddle.

Please call with any questions you may have or to reserve your place today!

Back at the Helm of 2014

January came and went in its usual impetuous manner, and we are now looking toward the paddling opportunities that are on the horizon. We have a few new programs in the offering this year that we are very excited about..

The Half Day Trip Program has two new additions..

Savannah River Plantations.
This trip digs deeper into the rise of the South and, in particular, into Savannah's years of prosperity prior to the Civil War. On either side of the city, and along both banks of the river, large plantations once produced indigo, root crops, cotton, and most predominantly rice.
From farming these cash crops, industrialization soon followed as ships, railroads, carriages and machinery were needed to distribute and export. The port of Savannah boomed, as the manufacturing of all these components came to the south.
Aside from Georgia's introduction of slavery in 1750, our tides were instrumental in the ability to successfully grow a very high quality rice known as Carolina Gold. Very little remains of these holdings save for the elaborate system of dykes and canals carved into the marsh, and of course the plantation names... Drakies, Raes Hall, Hermitage, and the most famous Mulberry Grove. We will paddle through some of these plantation fields, which are also a great habitat for birds and other wildlife.

Kayak Wormsloe
We have long been paddling the beautiful area surrounding Wormsloe Plantation.
As well as a great location for our sunset and moonrise tours, the Skidaway River and Jones Narrows have been the back drop for many films including 'Cape Fear' and most recently 'Savannah'.

Wormsloe Plantation, on the Isle of Hope, is as old as Georgia itself, established by Noble Jones in 1734. The Jones family came to the States aboard Oglethope's ship 'The Anne'. Upon offer of 500 acres,  Jones moved his wife and two kids eight miles beyond the safety of the stockade and began life as one of the most successful original colonists of Georgia. Indeed, the direct family descendents still reside at this plantation. Wormsloe State Histoic Site has teamed up with us as we paddle through the beautiful waterways and land close to the ruins of the old Jones house. We take a short walk with one of the park rangers for a great insight into colonial living 280 years ago. Our first trip is on March 30th and then as follows.....
Friday May 23, Sunday June 15, Sunday July 20, Tuesday Aug 12, Sunday Aug 17, Tuesday Sept 9, Sunday Sept 14, Friday Sept 28, Friday Oct 3, Sunday Oct 12, Friday Oct 31.

Stay tuned for details on more great paddling opportunities this year including marsh yoga, fishing trips and rough water sots.

Slowly Down the Road to the Cemetery

The picture below was taken this morning three years ago, on the River Ganges in India. We did not want to camp next to a corpse, but it was the last suitable place before night fall, after a long day of paddling. The River Ganges runs through the Gangetic plain, home to over 700 million people…almost a seventh of the entire human population.

Now... three years later, our shop is located a few doors down from the gates of the famous Bonaventure Cemetery. Not a day goes by without a  slow moving funeral procession passing along.
It strikes us that our most valuable commodity on earth is time. Our most precious resource is water, and the most fun is often spent with friends and family. As kids we know this to be true, but as we get older we get swayed and pressured by the madness of adulthood in the 21st century. It’s not until we are stretched out on the death bed that we remember the simplicity of what life was about all those years ago.
We do need a revolution. Not the bloody kind that creates more sorrow, misery and regret, but the kind of revolution where nobody shows up. Nobody goes to work, no bills are paid, no money is spent, no bombs go off, no trees chopped down, no animals made extinct, no chemicals dumped into our rivers and oceans. Rather, we all grab our canoes, kayaks and sail boats, our backpacks and bicycles, our hiking boots, our fishing poles, bows and arrows, and head off into wild nature with ourselves, our friends and families.  We are soon reminded of what was important then is even more important now. We are losing our minds because we are losing our mindfulness.
Of course, the Ganges River is the most polluted river in the world, but did you know the Savannah River is the 4th most polluted in the USA, and it is only going to become more so with the harbor expansion project.  Clean water is everything to all life... always has been, always will be. They are not sending spaceships to Mars looking for food or oil… they are looking for water.
So the revolution goes like this: Support your local Riverkeeper. Move slowly in nature and hang out with friends. Be Happy.
