Don Starkell Injured in Fire

The legendary canoeist suffered burns and smoke inhalation as he fought the blaze in his home near Winnipeg, Manitoba. Though later hospitalized in critical but stable condition, a neighbor and passerby had to restrain Starkell from going back into the burning house to fight the fire. Starkell, 77, is best known for his 12,000-mile canoe journey from his native Winnipeg to Belem, Brazil.
